Cabo is expensive while Cancun is more of a party type atmosphere but with a ton of excursions and tours that can be done. On TA I've read a lot of great reviews for a resort that I was called Golden Crown Paradise but has since changed it's name. But seriously, those Trip Advisor forums are great! From the home page you will need to do some navigating to find the forums although there might be a search bar somewhere on that home page. I've been using Trip Advisor for several years now. Go to tripadvisor.com and find the forums for specific travel and you will be able to read a zillion reviews on all the resorts in these areas.
